Old stuff

Satsu by Millie Velasco
I don't have anything new to share today so I'll just share something from a while back...

Backstory: I'm part of a group of caricature artists called ISCA for short.  ISCA is an acronym for International Society of Caricature Artists.  As the name suggests, ISCA is comprised of a group of caricature artists from around the world.  Once a year, there is a convention where a bunch of caricature artists meet for a week and draw all day long.  Literally. The ballroom, where artists draw, is open 24 hours a day for artists to come and go, and setup their area to draw each other.  It's really insane.  But a good insane. (I'll probably post more about this event someday.)

Throughout the year, ISCA continues to keep the fire of creativity going via the internet.  Part of the fun includes friendly "competitions" where a fellow caricature artist is chosen to be drawn by those who wish to participate. This caricature was a drawing I did of a wonderful caricature artist from Japan.  Her name is Satsu.  She was the model/subject for a drawing challenge that I did along with other caricature artists online, a couple years ago.  I had never met Satsu in person when I did this drawing back in 2014.  However, I finally did get a chance to meet her in the flesh at one of the following conventions back in 2015 (or was it 2016)?

It was really surreal to meet Satsu in person.  It's surreal to meet people I draw in person after I draw them.  People often commission me to draw their loved ones, and sometimes if I'm lucky, I actually get to meet them in person.

Satsu by Millie VelascoWith regards to this particular drawing, I originally drew it with marker on paper then colored it with Prisma color sticks.  I wasn't satisfied with the likeness, so I ended up importing it into Photoshop, and digitally painting it further with my mouse.  This was all before I had my iPad Pro.  Drawing with a mouse is a lot harder than drawing with a digital pencil.  Though, make no mistake about it -- it is also tricky to draw with a digital pencil. Slowly but surely I'm getting the hang of it.  Oh, heck.  Just plain drawing with a regular pencil in general is tricky.  Ha ha ha. That's why it's so good to practice.

Sorry I'm rambling.

In the end, I didn't end up winning the drawing competition for this drawing.  I like to participate more for the practice and experience... But Satsu was fun to draw and experiment in Photoshop.
