Actual drawing time: Not sure…
Thoughts:
This is a caricature study of Frank Sinatra's mugshot. I plan to do an actual painting of this study, but not quite sure how I want the painting to look.
I had done 2 other earlier attempts trying to figure out where and how to exaggerate his features. It's not as easy as it seems. Some faces are trickier than others to exaggerate as well as keep a good likeness. I went back to the lessons I learned from Jason Seiler's class that I took a while back… I have to consider the "weight" and "width" of the face/head. I played around with proportions of the face, the shape of the head, and the relationship of the features (i.e., how far apart, where to stretch, where to pull).
Originally, I was thinking of just doing the painting in black and white, but I think having color might be more interesting. To help me visualize a color scheme, I brought the image into Photoshop and decided to play around with colors there. I want to have some sort of visual or plan in my head before I start dinking around on an actual canvas and experimenting with expensive paint.
Thank you.
