Art of the Day #3: James Dean (Part 2)

Tools: iPad mini, sketchbook pro, stylus
Actual drawing time: Approx. 1 hour and 30 min.

Thoughts:
I was really hoping to have this finished by now, but it is taking longer than expected… Originally, I wanted to do an actual finished drawing each day, but based on the latest, it's not happening.  I don't know if it's because I wait till the final hour and end up being too tired to draw… In which case, I'm thinking of doing this earlier in the day instead of later at night… Or I am just attempting something that really does take a long time… Or… I'm not as good as I thought and it really is taking me a long time. Whatever it is… I feel so impatient.  I am used to drawing with an actual marker and actual paper -- not a stylus on a digital screen.  I am considering buying a new stylus because the one I have is very small and it feels a little uncomfortable.

I was getting so frustrated about getting the likeness… I kept struggling, because my mind was fighting with my eyes and hands… I was drawing things I thought I should draw instead of what I actually saw… So (you can't tell on the video, but…) I turned the image upside down and drew the picture upside down at one point so that I saw shapes instead of a face.

There's so much on my mind and plate these days, that I was really tempted to push this blog off, but I am really trying to be disciplined and post/draw something everyday… even if it's not finished.

As for the actual process, I'm glad I record the videos because I can actually see and review what I'm doing.  The process of this particular piece feels a lot like painting and sculpting rather than drawing.

I'm going to be busy tomorrow painting for the first time in a long time…. doing these pieces are helping me exercise my painting muscle!! It's hard to explain but doing this iPad work makes me feel so emotionally, mentally, artistically drained -- but in a good way.  It's like doing a bunch of artistic pushups.  My heart and artistic soul feel the burn already.

This piece is to be continued...

Thank you.
